Movie Review : Queen

Image
Word of mouth is still the best form of advertisement and by all means, Queen (the movie recently released with stellar performance by Kangana Ranaut) is going to be a sleeper hit like Kahaani and it should for all reasons.   I did not like the trailer of this movie when I saw it 6 months ago. This happens with quite a many films – their storyline and acting is superb; however the trailer doesn’t do any justice to the story. Thank god that I did not go by the trailer. I actually went to Inox to see it and I was bowled over by Kangana’s honest portrayal of a journey that transforms her from a demure coy clinging ivy type to a character full of spunk and spine. Journey to a foreign land after her marriage being called off which she calls her Honeymoon (without getting married) is a surprise itself and shows that the simple girl from Delhi is not going to take this uncalled for rejection lying down. Rani (Kangana) is the queen of heart of Vijay, the suave engineer who coaxed and cajoled (

Copper Chimney (KOREGAON PARK)

ADDRESS: Near Post 91, Lane 7, Off North Main Road,  Koregaon Park , Pune Copper chimney - a popular name in Aamchi Mumbai. When a group of friends decided to throw a birthday treat there, I got a little excited at the prospect. Was itching to sample the famous chain in a city different from its origin. We all landed up for the weekday lunch buffet. The place is easily located and shares vicinity with the likes of post91, Jimmy hu and a lot others. The interiors are fine. Nothing exceptional except the copper lamps hanging on the roof. Now, the food. Starters : 2 veg and 2 non veg. Frankly, I was disappointed. The buffets are mostly about the starters and desserts and the number itself put me off. However, we continued. Fish lasooni - the pieces were tender and juicy, grilled to perfection. Tasted good. Chicken seekh kabab - a good attempt. It was a tad bit cold though. Aloo pudina - the pudina flavour was good. however, it hadn't penetrated some of the aloo pieces fully. Pita with

Devils are Sleeping

If empty mind is a devil's workshop, then my devils are also sleeping. That is how devoid of good, bad and ugly thoughts my workshop has gotten. Needless to say, the joints are rusty and creaky. Really, my bones are cracking since the last few days.I keep thinking why a person gets so bored with routine. Especially, because I am the person who longs for a routine in place and gets upset by the disruption of routine. But when routine is so spaced out as it is now, I am at a loss. This has made me come back and blog as often as I used to in my first job and some time after that. When I was bored with myself and looked at keying in for some inspiration to scratch and spill out. You know, the kind that oozes out when you keep scratching the surface. Of late, I have begun to think I am getting sun sensitive. Just like these Europeans think to themselves. They are happy and active when the sun shines and dull when it is cloudy or rains or snows. That means, an average person in Europe is

Movie Review: Highway

Rating : 7/10 Release Date : 21st February, 2014 Time : 133 minutes Director, Writer : Imtiaz Ali; Music : A R Rahman Starring : Alia Bhatt, Randeep Hooda, Durgesh Kumar Its voyages of self-discovery that seem to move the needle for Imtiaz Ali – with films like Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal, Rockstar and now this one, he seems fascinated by the confused lives well-to-do people lead, of their search for what and who makes them tick. This is probably the strangest one of the three – a rich girl being unintentionally kidnapped around her wedding day – and then after a while, developing a bond with her kidnappers, enjoying a life of ‘freedom’ vs her normal constraint laden life. Of course, you also get some gorgeous visuals, a pulsating background score, some lovely, touching moments and also a strange, bittersweet end…but I found it an interesting watch, albeit not one I would be rushing to the theaters to view again. It does drag a bit – there are almost more shots of our countryside than of

Movie Review: Definitely, Maybe

An intelligent romantic comedy which explores three relationships and also three different streams, parenting, politics and, of course, love…with a pronounced, wry, self-deprecating sense of humour, as we chart the path of Ryan Reynolds to where he is today…about to get divorced and having a chat with his daughter, Abigail, about his love life. Abigail, all of ten, has just had her first sex education class, leaving her with lots of unanswered questions…like why one of her classmate’s parents say he was an accident (how can someone have sex by accident), why do people have sex if they don’t want kids and also, what is the man-word for slut ? One thing leads to another and Ryan is forced to tell th
