Best 3 Biryani Restaurants in Mumbai

Here’s a list of the 3 best places that sell biryani in Mumbai. The list is in descending order, for I can’t stop myself from raving about the ‘Best Place’ First..!!

Arselan: They are the BEST!!! Located near Khar railway station, this chain comes from Kolkata and serves the most delectable biryani in town. Choose from their Lucknowi, Hyderabadi, Dum and Arselan special biryani. We, without fail, order the Special Dum Biryani that come with a huge potato, an egg and two big pieces of soft, tender mutton. Yumm!! Potatoes in biryani are a Kolkata origin. The subtle flavours of garam masala and saffron, with minimal use of oil/ghee, and the extremely tender lamb pieces make the dish very very tasty. One plate is of Special Dum Biryani at Arselan is more than enough for one person unless you are very hungry  or very greedy.

Kakori House: Kakori House gets the 2nd position. They have their outlets in Mahim Causeway, Saki Naka, Oshiwara. They offer dum-gosht Lucknowi biryani, dum murgh masala biryani, chicken noormahal biryani, mutton noormahal biryani, and a veg biryani. We are the lovers of their Dum-Gosht Biryani. So, if it is not Arsela, it’s Kakori House for us. And since they are located at Saki Naka, they deliver within 45 minutes of ordering. One packet is enough for 2 adults. A little high on their oil/ghee compared to Arselan, the taste here is completely different. It’s more of the Awadhi style prevalent in parts of Uttar Pradesh in India. One packet comes with 6-7 small tender pieces of mutton.

Hangla: Hangla is 3rd in our list. You will find their small joints in Bandra, Lokhandwala, Powai and Malad. Hangla specialises in the Kolkata Biryani replete with a boiled egg, a potato and 2 pieces of mutton. They used to be good when they had just started, but over the last year or two, have gone bad. I suspect it’s because of the fact that they try to cater to the taste of those patrons who like very spicy biryani. When we complain that the Kolkata flavour is missing, they nonchantly remind us that the demand is different in the metropolitan Powai . Well, I still rate Hangla number 3, for when there’s nobody, there’s Hangla. The other bad thing about them though is their turnaround time. Place your order 2 hrs in advance and you will surely get it on time for dinner. Else, you will have to follow-up with them crazy!!
