1. Sania’s first coach was her father Imran Mirza. Imran put his journalistic career on the line to help his daughter chase her dreams. Sania started playing Tennis at the age of six.

2. Brought up in Hyderabad, Sania was born in Mumbai. She attended NASR school in Hyderabad and later graduated from St. Mary’s College. Mirza received an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the MGR Educational and Research Institute University in Chennai on 11 December 2008.


3. Mirza is the third Indian woman in the Open Era to feature and win a round at a Grand Slam tournament (the first one being Nirupama Vaidyanathan at the 1998 Australian Open and the second being Shikha Uberoi at the 2004 US Open). She also became the 1st Indian woman to be seeded in a Grand Slam event at the 2006 Australian Open.



4. Sania was conferred Arjuna Award in 2004. In 2005, WTA awrded her with ‘Newcommer of the Year.’ In 2006, she was accorded a Padmashri.


5. Sania had a huge crush on Russian Tennis star Marat Safin.


6. In September 2014, some conservatives raised objections and issued ‘fatwa’ against Sania over her dresses on Tennis court. A hurt Sania vowed never to play in India.


7. Sania got engaged to childhood friend Sohrab Mirza in 2009. However, the alliance soon fell apart.

10. Talking about family; Sania And Shoaib have been married for three years now. On her recent visit to India for promoting IBL, she was asked about her plans to start a family, to which Sania replied that she would plan a kid only after retiring from sports so that she may devote sufficient time to motherhood.


11. Not India nor Pakistan. Sania stays with husband Shoaib in Dubai. Shoaib;  Sania informs, is a very understanding partner and a caring husband.

Back in 2014, Paddington came out of absolutely nowhere to become one of my favourite films of the year, a real family treat that was warm, pitch perfect and genuinely laugh out loud funny.
