What are the most interesting facts about the Royal Enfield?


1. It was the first company in India to provide a four stroke in engine motorcycle in India.
2. It was the first company in India to provide rear disc brake in a two wheeler.
3. It started as Madras Motorcycles in India (dealership)
4. It's first(oldest) plant is in Tiruvottiyur, Chennai 
5. It used to make 650cc, 700cc bikes in India in 1970s but stopped due to no demand.
6. It also made a 175cc  Mini Bullet
7. In 2001, the company sold about 25000 bikes annually. Today it sells more than 30,000 bikes in a month.
8. In some areas of India, you have to wait for almost an year to get your bike after booking it.
9. If you know a bit of racing, one person has won second place in Isle of Man TT in past on a Royal Enfield.
10. Royal Enfield Bullet (Standard) is the longest running motorcycle still in production.
11. The company was going in bankrupt state in 1994-95 then Siddhartha Lal took over as MD and turned the company around.

12. The original Royal Enfield logo featured a cannon, with the slogan “Made like a gun, goes like a bullet”. Suits a RE perfectly but the funny part is that this logo was also used on lawnmowers that were manufactured by the company.


13. You must have seen the RE with a sidecar in the movie Sholay. The sidecar for RE was first introduced in 1912. At the time of World War I, the sidecar was specially designed to carry a machine gun for military use.


14. The RE is originally a UK company but the company died down in UK in 1971. However, Enfield of India was set up in 1956 and it took off pretty well and kept the RE name going on even after the closure of its parent company.


15. UK and India RE combined, the Bullet model has been in continuous production since 1948. This is probably the longest continuation of a motorcycle model in the world.


16. In 1990, Enfield India produced a diesel version of the motorcycle called the Taurus. It was not a commercial success.


17. RE has a concept store in Delhi which looks like a living room of a Rider. It has a disassembled Continental GT on one of its wall.
18. RE exports its motorcycles to 42 countries around the world including US, Japan and Germany.
